Vinyl acetate-co-ethylene copolymers (VAE) in powder form are white, free-flowing, dry powders that can be easily redispersed into water to form a stable emulsion. Often referred to as “solid latex,” VAE redispersible powders (RDPs) are easier to ship, store (thanks to excellent storage stability), handle, and dry-mix compared to VAEs in emulsion form. VAEs dominate the global market for redispersible polymer powders.
Dry mixing VAE-RDPs with other powders such as cement, sand, or light aggregate at a field site or manufacturing location ensures consistency and reliable performance. VAE-RDPs serve as cement and plaster modifiers or as binder resins for inorganic materials like gypsum and hydrated lime. Formulators also use VAE-RDPs as the sole binder resin in construction adhesives.
Incorporating VAE-RDPs into dry-mix formulations offers several benefits, including enhanced workability, water retention, plasticity, dispersion, and freeze stability. The relatively high ethylene content of VAE resins makes them soft and flexible. As a modifier, VAE-RDPs improve flex strength, crack resistance, adhesion, abrasion and impact resistance, and water repellency.
